Reducing Weather Damage Insurance Claims with Titanium® Synthetic Underlayment

_MG_0811The use and installation of Titanium synthetic roofing underlayment as part of a roofing system provides a secondary layer of protection against leaks in the event of major weather conditions.   Titanium is a very strong membrane which acts as a water and vapour barrier that can prevent water infiltration in the event of primary roofing materials being damaged or blown off in a storm.   This allows a homeowner time to get the roof repaired after a storm in a timely matter, by minimizing water damage to the interior of the home, thereby reducing insurance claims.

Oil saturated felt building paper used to be the underlayment of choice. Now, however, there are a variety of substitute products available made from highly engineered polyolefin materials that are not only water resistant, but are also lighter and stronger. In fact, synthetics are far superior to felt in that they do not absorb water and wrinkle or buckle like felt.  Furthermore, they won’t dry out or leach oils when exposed to heat; or crack, stiffen, or become unmanageable in cold weather.  Given the variety of grades and quality of synthetic underlayments available, it is important to choose a suitable underlayment that matches the expected service lifetime and the installation requirements of the primary roofing material being installed.  When choosing an underlayment the following factors should be considered:

  1. Exposure time – The length of time a project will be exposed and the weather conditions expected during the exposure period – Thicker products normally perform better in harsh conditions and are designed for longer exposures.
  2. Ease of Use – Titanium products are lighter, wider, easier to handle and wider rolls means less laps and seams per job – saving you up to 30% of labour time, energy and money.
  3. Safety – A proven slip-resistant surface is essential to increase the safety of the installation crew. Titanium’s patented Sure-Foot® nodular walking surface is a proven performer.
  4. Product backside slip – The backside of the underlayment should be treated with a slip resistant coating. This helps the product resist from sliding on the deck during install before it is nailed.
  5. Heavier Primary Roofing materials / Increased Wear Traffic – The amount of traffic or storage of heavy primary roofing materials like cement or ceramic tiles that an underlayment will be expected to withstand.
  6. Code approvals – Has the synthetic underlayment been approved by key international and local building codes.
  7. Warranty – Does the product have an appropriate warranty to match the expected life of the primary roofing material chosen – most asphalt felt products come with no warranty. Titanium products have a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
