By now the “value proposition” for use of fabric supported geomembrane products is well understood:
- High strength to weight
- Ability to be fabricated in to large panels
- Field weld-able

Light-weight reinforced (fabric supported) geomembranes, also commonly called industrial fabrics include: oil and gas industry frac ponds and pit liners, drill pads, temporary liners, rain cover applications in areas such as mining and landfills, agricultural crop covers, ground covers, ponds, truck and rail car liners, etc. These materials might typically be designated by the FGI as <= 25 mil (0.64mm) thick for example.
Heavy-weight reinforced (fabric supported) geomembranes include: waste water storage and floating covers, above ground storage tanks, irrigation, pond, canal, basin and other linings, water flow redirection, aquaculture, potable water containment and many other uses. These materials might typically be designated by the FGI as > 25 mil (0.64mm) thick for example.
As referenced in the previous blog dealing with industry standards there are a number of standards themselves for the designer to select from. A wide range of quality of materials exists and are commercially available to the often unsuspecting consumer. Regardless of the selected governing standard the owner and designer should nonetheless ensure these baseline measures exist prior to purchase:
- Materials manufactured by a GAI Lap accredited manufacturer
- NSF 61 standard documentation if for ‘water’ application
- Warranty in existence and matched to the application
