TWILLIUM
Fabrication Guide

A. Unrolling and Set Up

Ounce for ounce coated woven PE is much stronger than PVC products.  Your current unwind stand will easily handle the roll weight of
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM (See Figure 1). Your set up procedure will remain the same but your converting time will likely decrease, and this is a savings to you.

Unrolling and stacking of panels will be much easier with our lighter
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM . The stress and strain on your employees back will be greatly reduced, efficiencies will increase, and less chance for employee workplace claims.  Yet another great advantage to you is that DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  are available in virtually any width up to 144” (12 feet) wide roll stock.  Here again, the wider widths instantly increase production output and also reduce the number of heat seams.

Faster set up and unrolling will add dollars to your bottom line.  Fewer seams will enhance the aesthetics of the finished product.

B. Sewing

For most applications sewing is required for your finished product.  As you can clearly see from the photo,
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  can be readily sewn to create edge hems, pockets, reinforcing strips, or any other construction that you may currently require from PVC.  The strength of your seam comes from the construction such as single, double fold, J hem, butterfly hem, and the list goes on.  (See Figure 2)

Regardless of your machine, chain stitch or lock stitch, it will perform very well on our materials.  It is recommended that 3 to 4 stitches per inch be used for any stitching performed on
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  .

Any sewing you can do with PVC, we can do with
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM . DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  is lighter weight than PVC, and possess less tacky surface with translates into much easier sewing for your people.

C. Heat Seaming

DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  is easily and efficiently heat seamed to create large fabricated covers, liners and other enclosure systems.  Here again, our wide width of 144” (12 feet) roll stock will greatly increase your efficiencies compared to narrow width PVC.

Heat seaming can be performed using hot air or hot wedge.  The attached photo shows the Miller Weld Master in action as 144” (12 feet) roll stock is paneled together into large covers.   Floor crawlers are also commonplace to create larger panels on the floor without the need of tables. (See Figure 3
www.weldmaster.com/)

Worried about nasty vinyl fumes?  Maybe you should be!  Although there is a minor odor when heat sealing polyethylene, it is far less and not toxic as compared to PVC.   Much debate has surrounded this issue, but the facts speak volumes.  PVC related fumes will corrode the exposed steel components on your equipment.

Heat seams will create a bond that is 90% the strength of the parent material.  Efficiencies range from 20 ft to 150 ft per minute.  Running multiple floor crawlers or using a multi headed welding machine simply compounds your increased efficiencies.

Send us a sample of your material today and we will return the sample with a full heat seam.  For your comparison we will also include a sample of
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  that best matches your material in strength.

D. Grommets

Since
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  is stronger than PVC ounce for ounce, grommeting is not a problem.  Any grommet machine either off the shelf or your own hand made unit will work effectively on our material.  Off the shelf grommet machines have the power to punch through and set into any of our products.  Single, double and even triple fold will be like a hot knife through butter.  (See Figure 4)

E. Quality Control

ASTM standards are followed in the production of our roll stock and can be used in testing the strength of sewn seams, heat seams, and many other areas of construction.  In general you will find that heat seams are 90% of the parent material strength.  See the specification sheets for more information on the physical properties of
DURATHENE or TWILLIUM .

F. Packaging/Freight

It’s not rocket science-lighter weight material is easier to handle and package.  The less tacky surface will give you the ability to roll or fold your finished product with ease. (See Figure 5)  The finished package will be smaller, be less weight to carry, and will add freight savings to your bottom line.  (See Figure 6) Are you shipping PVC packages by common LTL carrier because it is slightly over the courier limitations?  Try our DURATHENE or TWILLIUM  for a strong finished product that meets the courier limitations.

DURATHENE & TWILLIUM : stronger, lighter, cheaper, smaller;  doesn’t it all make $ sense!
